The tournament took place over three days at the lovely venue of St. Georges Grammar School in Mowbray.
On day one we were all excited and ready to play, the men had four high intensity games to face and the ladies had three. We knew that they would all be tough games as the senior standard of touch in our country is at a high level.
The woman had a very unfortunate turn of luck on the Saturday which proved them having to play against the strongest side, Western Province, in order to make the semi final round. It was a tight game but sadly Natal lost 4-3 placing them into the 5th and 6th playoffs, where they came out victorious.
The men on the other hand mad the semi final round only to meet the defending champions, Western Cape. The game was a nail biter as both teams were equally matched with even score at half time. It went to a drop off. Chirping the ref resulted in one of the Western Cape men getting sent for time and with four players to three on the field Garth Roux took a quick tap ball only to dive in the winning try that would send them into the final.
In the final the men faced Western Province, this was the first time in 8 years that Natal had made the Men’s final. They played with their hearts however they were unlucky to narrowly lose by 1 try.
Huge congratulations must go out to the Natal Men’s team for bringing home silver, we are very proud of you.
And to the ladies team, we are sure you will shine at the upcoming Super Sixes tournament in June.
Special mention must be made to all those who reffed at the tournament, Natal have been complimented time and time again for their exceptional standard of referees and this tournament was no exception. Thanks must go to Linton and Marty who have helped and guided those referees to be some of the best in South Africa.
Congratulations to the following Natal touch players who where recognized at the tournament:
Men’s overall MVP: Garth Roux
KZN Men’s MVP: Mark Sleven
Ladies Overall Top Try Scorer (11): Caryn McAlery
KZN Ladies MVP: Sam Wilson
Well done to all of you.
Overall Natal had a very successful tournament and we look forward to dominate at Super Sixes this year.
